The U.S. state of Illinois is close to becoming smoke-free. This is partly thanks to a new law that will take effect on January 1st. The law bans the use of vapes inside public places.
Vaping products continue to exist in many forms. They have become the most addictive product that people can buy at gas stations, vape shops, and online stores.
Morrison, a Lake Forest Democrat, says:
“We have made solid progress toward de-normalizing the perception of tobacco. And I am proud that on January 1st, e-cigarette usage will be banned indoors.”
The Smoke Free Illinois Act passed in 2007. It prohibits smoking in most public places and within 15 feet of entrances, and requires the posting of “No Smoking” signs. However, when the act came into effect, people mainly smoke traditional cigarettes and cigars.
The use and popularity of vapes are increasing in recent years—especially among middle school students. According to recent reports, this led Morrison to add the product to the Smoke Free Illinois Act through House Bill 1540. The House Bill 1540 was signed by Governor JB Pritzker on July 28, 2023.
“Secondhand vape smoke contains harmful and potentially harmful chemicals.” says Kristina Hamilton, Illinois advocacy director for the American Lung Association.
“The use of e-cigarettes has skyrocketed in recent years with tobacco companies targeting teens and young people with enticing flavors. This expansion of the landmark Smoke-Free Illinois Act will reduce the negative effects of e-cigarettes on our communities.”
House Bill 1540 will take effect on January 1st.
