The Scottish Government states that it will ban disposable vapes by April 1, 2025. Scotland has previously joined England and Wales in banning the use of disposable vapes. The draft legislation follows a UK-wide consultation. It aims to create a “smoke-free generation”.
Scottish Circular economy minister Lorna Slater said the three UK regions had jointly set a date for the ban. The draft legislation will be open for public comment until 8 March 2024. Then it will be taken foward in Scotland using powers under the Environment Protection Act 1990.
Lorna Slater points that,
“Legislating to ban the sale and supply of single-use vapes fulfils a Programme for Government commitment to reduce vaping among non-smokers and young people and take action to tackle the environmental impact.”
This ban will improve public health and protect the environment.
The decision was based on concerns that an increasing number of young people are using vapes. According to data, over 26 million disposable vapes were discarded in Scotland last year.
The Scottish Government will also introduce plans across the UK to raise the tobacco buying age. Makes it illegal for anyone born after January 1, 2009 to buy the vaping product. This will be brought forward through UK-wide legislation. And Scotland will need a legislative consent motion.
Sheila Duffy, chief executive of anti-smoking charity(ASH) Scotland, says the plans is an “important step forward”.
Vape industry insiders show different attitudes to the ban.
Some believe that disposable vape ban may flourish the black market again. And it may cause black market prices to rise.
However, other insiders think that disposable vapes are a transitional products with limit of user experience and performance. Open vapes and pod vapes will become the major trends in the future market.
Besides, we asked Mr. Franky Zhou, GM of VPFIT, the leading vape manufacturer to comment about this ban. He points that ban will bring new opportunities for open type, pod vape and e-liquids.
“Our vape brand VPFIT plans to launch new open pod vape devices in UK vape market in 2024. And we will expand our product line for open and pod vaping devices.”
