MSHR Chairman Professor Sharifa Ezat Wan Puteh said that more and more smokers are turning to electronic cigarettes to quit smoking, and the potential of electronic cigarette in reducing the smoking rate in Malaysia is huge and cannot be ignored. MSHR suggested that the government should regulate e-cigarettes and provide proper training on nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) and e-cigarettes to sellers.
In addition, it is also wise to establish and establish an independent committee driven by science and evidence to conduct in-depth research on electronic cigarette products. Although e-cigarettes have health risks, the use of e-cigarettes reduces the harm by at least 95% compared with traditional cigarettes. Therefore, the government needs to accept the advice of independent health experts and make decisions based on science and evidence. It may help reduce the number of smokers.
Sharifa believes that the government should take immediate measures to use existing laws to regulate electronic cigarette products, and protect consumers from illegal ingredients by introducing product standards and prohibiting the use of minors.
